The Panther Golf team got a welcome surprise at the start of the season when an indoor simulator, funded by a generous donor, was installed in the Callaway Education Building.
Head Golf Coach Shannon Lipham said this facility will increase practice time and provide an outlet for his student-athletes to utilize during severe weather.
“The Foresight GC3 simulator will help the team develop their skills off the golf course,” he said. “It gives them the information they need to play at their best.”
Lipham said this new addition will help them prepare for tournaments against top-ranked programs in their division.
“Nineteen of the Top 25 NCAA Division III golf programs had some type of indoor facility in 2021,” he said. “Being able to have this simulator really leveled the playing field.”
In 2022, LC’s Golf team ranked 53rd out of about 300 Division III programs in the country.
“We were the youngest team in the country last year,” Lipham said. “Our freshmen are a year older and have a year’s worth of experience. I expect us to keep getting better.”
He said he is building on the foundation of former Head Golf Coach Lee Richter, who led LC to be one of the premier Division III programs in the country. During Richter’s tenure, the program won three conference championships and the 2003 United States Collegiate Athletic Association national championship.
“We’re working on getting this program back to where we’re competing not only for league championships but also national championships,” Lipham said.
